Advantages of the Hoyt Bows

Hunters and competition shooters alike shoot Hoyt bows exclusively. Hoyt bows are one of the best on the market and their history proves it. Competitors shooting Hoyt bows have won more tournaments than any other make of bow. Pick one up and shoot it and you will realize why.

One of the main technologies Hoyt uses is split limb technology. The split limbs are lighter, quieter, and produce less vibration. Being lighter makes it easier to lug through the woods to your favorite hunting spot, or down the tournament trail. The split limbs are also much more durable than the solid limb technology other bow manufacturers use.

More on the durability of split limbs, controlled tests show that solid limbs start to fail around 25 dry fires. They start to crack where the V-groove is where the cam is mounted. Cracks are also found at where the limb mounts to the riser.

By removing the weaknesses of solid limbs a split limb system will last to around 1000 dry fires. This is proven by controlled lab tests. By removing the need for a V-groove to mount the cam, a weak point is eliminated. Keep in mind you should never test on your own bow. You wouldn't want to hurt your bow, or worse yet, yourself.

When shooting repeatedly vibration can reduce shooter comfort. Hoyt employs some vibration reducing technologies that go a long way to ensure shooter comfort. Hoyt's TEC design decreases low-frequency vibration and Hoyt's Riser Shox reduces ringing vibration in the hoyt bow.

Archery Targets to Aim for!

Archery and a List of Archery Terms

archery target
Arthur Archer asked:

Archery and a List of Archery Terms:

When we think about all Archery has to offer we don't always look at terms. So today we will take a look at some of the terms used in Archery and see where they themselves correspond. Whether your talking Shortbow, Longbow or any other type of thing that has to do with Archery. It is a good idea to familiarize yourself with the terms used.

A:

A/C/C

Aluminium/Carbon/Competition arrow shafts made by 'Easton'.

Made of multiple layers of carbon graphite fibres in a epoxy resin wrapped over a high strength aluminium shaft (0.2mm thick).

The code numbers printed on the shaft indicate its size:

eg. 3-71/300 where 3 is the number of carbon layers, 71 is the last two digits of the core aluminium shafts thickness in thousandths of an inch (0.271") and 300 is the spine of the arrow in thousandths of an inch.

There are specific types of points and nocks for this arrow shaft.

These shafts are lighter than the 'Ultra-Lite' Aluminium shafts.

A/C/E

Aluminium/Carbon/Extreme arrow shafts made by 'Easton'.

Made much the same as the A/C/C arrows, except the shafts are 'barrel-shaped', being thicker in the centre of the shaft and tapered at each end. This creates a much lighter and stiffer arrow.

The code numbers printed on the shaft indicates its size:

eg. 1206G/370 where 12 is the diameter of the aluminium core shaft measured in 64ths of an inch, 06 is the aluminium shafts thickness measured in thousandths of an inch, G indicates the model series and 370 is the spine of the arrow in thousandths of an inch.

There are specific types of points and nocks for this arrow shaft.

These shafts are lighter than the A/C/C shafts.

Actual Draw Weight

The measured or calculated draw weight of an Archer.

eg. a marked bow of 30 lbs. at 28" draw when used by a person having a 27" draw length will have an actual draw weight of 28lbs.

(a 1" difference in draw length will make approx. 2 lbs. difference in draw weight.)

Aim

To superimpose a sight pin on the centre of a target or, when not using a sight, the placement of the tip of the arrow on a particular point for a given distance.

Anchor

A combination of points to which the bowstring and/or index finger of the drawing hand are drawn to on the face and neck.

Anchor point

Definite spot on the archers body, normally the face, on which string and index finger come to rest.

Arbalest

A medieval crossbow that needed a windlass to draw the bowstring back.

Arm guard

A piece of stiff material used to protect the bow arm from the slap of the bow string upon release, worn on the inside of the bow arm.

Arrow Case

A box of wood or other material to store and carry arrows. Each arrow being held separate either via foam, slots or clips to protect the feathers or vanes.

Arrow plate

A plate, adjustable or fixed, to which the arrow rest is attached.

A piece of horn, shell or leather just above the handle of a longbow where the arrow passes as it leaves the bow.

Arrow point or pile

Metal point inserted into end of arrow shaft. Can also be that the shaft fits inside the point as in wooden shafts and some carbon shafts.

Arrow rest

A projection or support on the bow or the arrow plate located in the sight window on which the arrow lies when nocked on the bowstring.

Arrowsmith

A person who makes metal arrowheads.

Ascham

A tall narrow cabinet in which bows and arrows are kept.

Axle

The bearing pin holding the wheel in the limbs of a compound bow.

(The length of a compound bow is measured from top axle to bottom axle).

B:

Back

The side of the bow away from the bowstring.

Backed Bow

A bow which has been backed with rawhide, wood, fibre or sinew.

Ballista

A very large medieval crossbow used by an army attacking the walls of a besieged town. This crossbow was capable of firing large rocks and spears long distances.

Barebow

The discipline of shooting without a bow sight, stabilisers and release aid.

Bass or Bast

The twisted straw back of a straw mat target ****.

Belly

The side of the bow nearest the bow string. Now called the 'face'.

Blunt point

Usually a conical rubber arrow point with a flat tip designed not to let the arrow penetrate a target, but rather bounce off.

Bob-tailed Arrow

A arrow that is thicker at the point. It tapers to the nock end.

Bodkin

A medieval type of arrowhead designed to shoot through protective chainmail or armour usually worn by Knights.

Bolt

A short arrow used in a crossbow.

Bow arm

The arm that holds the bow.

Bow hand

The hand that holds the bow.

Bowhunter

A person who hunts animals using a bow.

In Australia, only feral animals may be hunted. Native animals are protected.

Popular feral animals hunted are; wild pig, goats, foxes, deer and water buffalo.

Bow sight

A mechanical device attached to the bow with which the archer can aim directly at the target.

Bow sling

A leather or nylon strap, fastened to either the bow or the archer's hand, which prevents the bow from falling to the ground when the archer shoots without gripping the bow.

Bowstring

A multi stranded string of either Dacron, Kevlar or Fastflight looped to the bow nocks or teardrops.

Bow stringer

Cord with two pockets of dissimilar size or one pocket and one saddle, used to string a recurve bow.

Bow stave

A piece of wood used to make a bow.

Bow square

T-Shaped device to measure brace height and nocking point location.

Bowyer

A person who makes bows.

Brace height

Shortest distance from the string to the pivot point of the bow when strung. (Old English : Fistmele).

Bracer

A name used for an armguard. Usually used to describe the leather armguard used with a longbow.

Broadhead

A arrowhead with triangular shaped cutting blades used for hunting animals.

Bubble

See 'level'.

Butt (Target Butt)

Any backstop to which a target face is attached.

C:

Cables

The plastic covered steel cables that connect the string via the cams or wheels to the opposite limb of a compound bow. Cables can also be made of Fastflite string material.

Cams

The wheels on a compound bow have a 'cam shape' to one side that controls the amount of force and the shape of the draw/force curve of the bow. Many different cam shapes are available to choose from;

eg. Hoyt's 'Accuwheel' = soft cam, smooth shooting for target archers,

'Performa Cam' = radical cam, stores maximum energy for bowhunters.

Cant

To hold the bow to the right or left while at full draw. The reference to right or left is determined by the position of the top limb.

Cast

The distance a bow can propel an arrow.

Centre serving

The protective winding on the centre of the string where the arrows are nocked.

Centreshot bow

A bow where the sight window has been cut past the bow's centreline.

Classic style

A method of shooting with as little deviation as possible from normal relaxed body position.

Clicker

Small strip of metal mounted on the sight window in front of the arrow rest giving precise indication of full draw by snapping off the arrow point with an audible "click".

Clout

A form of target shooting in which an arrow is shot into the air at a 15 metre diameter target on the ground at distances of up to 180 metres.

Cock feather

The feather or vane set at right angles to the slot in the nock (also called the index fletch).

Composite bow

A Bow made of more than one material. Not necessarily a laminated bow.

Compound bow

A hand-drawn, hand-held bow that for similar poundage at full draw, stores more energy than a recurve bow through the use of two cables and two eccentric wheels. Most modern compound bows have a 65% let-off of the peak draw poundage at full draw, e.g. a compound bow of 60lb. peak weight will have a holding weight of approx. 21lb. at full draw.

Creep

Letting the arrow move slowly forward before release (not maintaining draw length). Usually caused by loss of shoulder/back muscle tension.

Cresting

Coloured bands applied to the arrow shaft used as identifying marks.

These are just some of the terms that you may encounter in the world of Archery.

See for yourself why Archery is the sport that it is, You will be glad that you did.

Archery Targets to Aim for!

Archery and 3d Archery

archery target
Arthur Archer asked:

Archery and 3D Archery:

3D Archery events are known all around North America, Across the 50 States. As the types of these events vary, So do the types of Archery targets that can be obtained. As well as the brands, there are many obtainable targets that the archer may want to consider in the search for suitable targets.

There are such brands as Browning, Longhorn, and McKenzie just to name a few. They all vary to different degrees, The Browning 3D targets offer refillable mid sections. They also come in a variety of shapes and sizes and different animals. The Longhorn targets feature PolyFoam self-sealing foam for extra durability and lasting wear.

There are also various Archery Clubs that use these types of targets in there groups. They are both realistic and help the Archer to gain some confidence before there actual shoot. One club to note would be The Archery Shooter Association, Based in Kennesaw,Georgia, They offer tournaments and a community coaching course. There are many of these types of organizations throughout North America and Canada. These are a great place for the Archer to tune his proficiency.

There are many Archery ranges and clubs throughout most country's in general. These are themselves a great place for the archer to practice shoot and get a feel for archery and target shooting. Archery in itself as a hobbies vehicle, Can be a great way to let off some steam and have some fun.

Keep it simple, whether your shooting longbow, recurve or Compound Archery has something for everyone.

Discount Hoyt Bows!

hunting bow
Paul Winter asked:

Bow fishing is very popular among hunters in the off season for deer and birds. To fishing in this way you need the appropriate equipment to basically spear the fish. Bow fishing generally takes place in the warmer months for the most obvious reasons. Fishermen will usually either find a shallow body of water to hunt or may hunt from a small boat for lakes and rivers. It is also possible to bow hunt in the ocean, which can land some wonderful wall decorations as well as bragging rights. There are several different types of bow fishing equipment and it depends on the type of fish that you are looking to hunt.

During the winter months the hunters use their bow and arrow to hunt deer then turn their focus to the water with their equipment during the summer months. They claim that the bow fishing keeps their aim in practice and provides the same excitement that the land hunts provides. Many even state that the water hunt is more of a challenge due to the reflection and movement of the fish. Those little devils are quicker than what you think. Bow fishing equipment truly puts the hunt back into the sport of fishing.

For many years carps were regarded as the trash of the lake. Today many fishermen are seeing them as an adrenal pumping hunt. These fish are the larger fish of the lakes and rivers so they provide an excellent target. If it is more of a skillful shot that you are looking for then hunt a smaller fish! That should get you practiced up to one great shot before winter rolls around! There is also a great line of bow fishing equipment for the ocean fish such as the stingray, sharks and other marine life. There are many tours that take individuals out on the ocean for an afternoon of fishing.

Bow fishing dates back to ancient times when man would stand in the water and spear their dinner with a long hand carved arrow. Today there is a more advanced line of bow fishing equipment that powers the arrow. It is still a difficult sport and one should not assume that it is a great deal easier today over the past centuries, but the equipment has certainly improved. There are other types of equipment such as special arrows for different types of fish and even spear guns. That way there is something for everyone when participating in the sport of bow fishing.

An Overview of Different Archery Styles

archery target
Scott Byers asked:

The first type of archery we'll focus on is "Target Archery". Target Archery is practiced my mainly competitive archers which consist of "Target Archery Rounds" in which the archer shoots arrows at a target at various distances, usually wearing a bracer on their arm to keep loose clothing away from the string and a finger tab to make for a smooth release off the fingers. Some archers also use a chest guard to keep loose clothing at bay. In this type of archery, the archer stands erect. The archer's back muscles are used to pull the arrow to the anchor point.

The second type of archery is "Clout Archery". In this type of archery, participants shoot from a distance at selected marking areas in the ground. This type of archery gets its name from what old English would call "Clouts" on the ground for the marking areas. For gentlemen, they must shoot at 180 yards and ladies must shoot at 140 yards. Junior gentleman under eighteen years old must shoot at 140 yards, under sixteen 120 yards, under fourteen 100 yards, under twelve 80 yards. Junior ladies under eighteen must shoot at 120 yards, under sixteen at 100 yards, and under thirteen 80 yards.

The third type archery we'll focus on is "Field Archery". The only similarity this type of archery bears to target archery is that there is a target to be shot at, but that's all the similarity they share. The shooters in this type of archery will shoot at 28 targets in a wilderness/nature environment in a sequence, shooting 4 arrows at each target. Each of the targets are set at different distances and angles and must be shot either up or down depending on the kind of target. The most commonly shot rounds in this type of archery are "Field" and "Hunter" rounds. The targets also vary in size depending on the round being shot at it as well as the distance. Because of the rocky, unsteady terrain of field archery, it makes it significantly more difficult than the flat targets shot at in target archery.

The fourth and final type of archery is called "Flight Archery". It's meant to improve the distance of the archers' shooting and is an important and traditional part of archery. Different archers' experimenting with this type of archery has resulted in better, more accurate shooting. Flight archery is practiced in wide, open areas because of the distance that carbon arrows can fly (about 300 M or more). This type of archery is started by putting down a shooting line. In flight archery, you must have both feet between the line, unlike target archery where you must only have one. With the arrow on the string, you point the bow up at about a 45 degree angle (over head draw). You slowly draw the bow as soon as full draw is reached. In flight archery, there is no holding at full draw because the arrow will lose energy.

The Requirements for the Art of Archery

archery supply
Tevin Grant asked:

The art of archery has lived in human history since ancient times when hunters sourced for food in the animal fields with weapons in the shape of bows and arrows, till modern times where you now have people enjoying the sport as witnessed by hundreds of individuals who constantly look for archery fields and cheap archery supplies. What had started out as a form of tool to sustain human lives has gradually evolved into a global sport that not only provides a colorful spectacle, but also requires endless hours of discipline and dedication to perfect and perform. Archery has also remained an integral part of the art of hunting, where individuals participate in both the real shooting of animals for food, as well as the gaming aspect of prize hunting.

Archery has a very basic structure, which is essentially made up of the two critical components of the bow and arrow. The bow is the main tool that provides the archer or hunter with the foundation on which to shape his prey and to launch his attacks. It is the platform on which the archer uses to take aim at the target and from which the arrow will be shot. This is also the reason why a lot of effort and hard work is put into the design aspects of a bow. It has resulted in spawning many different types of archery bows that each serve different needs and contain unique advantages, including the longbow, short bow, crossbow and the different types of compound bows such as Diamond compound bows and many more. The advancement in technology in the modern world has also contributed to modern bows that strike a balance in superior quality and smooth usability, as well as price savings which result in equipment such as cheap compound bows.

The arrow is the killing tool with which archers use either to snare their prey, or to shoot at targets designated in archery competitions or hunting tournaments. As with the modern bow, arrows are also made from various materials including, but not limited to, carbon and wood. Depending on the archer’s situation and also personal preferences, different types of arrows are used. Factors such as the weight of the arrow, the hunter’s target or tournament rules dictate the eventual use of an arrow type. The arrow shaft needs to be built with strong material in order to provide the strength and stability required when the arrow tip hits the target. The arrow tip, in turn, has to provide the cutting edge necessary to plunge deep into the target to secure a perfect hit.

For practitioners of the art of archery, one needs to spend much time on a trained stance that will provide further strong foundations to shooting an arrow. The archer has to ensure that his stance is correct and steady, with the body posture fixed and aligned to his eyes and bow in order to launch the arrow properly. Failure to do so would not only hurt the archer physically, but the archery equipment could be used inappropriately which may harm its longevity. While this is extremely critical for archers who indulge in hunting, it can be often be overlooked by archers who participate more in tournaments which feature competitions based on shooting accuracy and overall archery ability. However, ultimately developing the correct stance and skills required for archery is necessary if one wishes to go far in the sport and to enjoy it at the same time.

Archery and Beursault

archery target
Arthur Archer asked:

Archery and Beursault:

Beursault, Is a traditional Northern French and Belgian type of Archery contest. From 50 meter away, Archer teams shoot two targets that are facing each other. With this in an array of perpendicular wooden walls, These secure a path to the parallel of the shooting range. At the start of each of these rounds, Archers take there own arrows and shoot directly in the opposite directions of each other (This gives them a certain windage and advantage).

For constant arrow quality, one will shoot as they would have in Mid-Evil times. A round black and white target will mimic a soldier of the opposing Army. It's diameter is likewise shoulder wide, the center is that of heart shaped.

Of course this also differs in such as other forms of Archery, As one would well guess.

There is also Wand Shoot, Roving Marks, and other various forms of competition archery shooting. These are all traditional forms of Archery shooting and sport. There truly is a vast array of various fun to be had in Archery. As an Archer one could try all different forms of the sport and never get tired of what can be had and seen in Archery. From modern to ancient these different styles of Archery have endured into what we see today.

There are many different forms of Archery. When it comes to ‘game’ it is formerly known as ‘bowhunting’ unlike that of Bowfishing which is used purely for the hunting of fish but with both techniques legal, cultural and seasonal differences come into play and must be considered when comparing to seasons condoned for ‘firearm’ hunting.

Whether your target shooting or bowhunting, Archery has something for everyone young and old.
