Deer Hunting — Bow Hunt 9pt

HuntingFootage asked:

Deer Bow Hunt - HUNTINGFOOTAGE.COM

The 2.5 minute video is the conclusion of a 2 week chase for a specific 9pt on 4000 acres in the south Texas brush.

I spotted him on 10-27, but couldn't get a shot. I sat in my blind overlooking an oat patch more days than I can count trying to get another shot at him. Finally on 11-11, with my buddy Chris in the blind, he returned. The neighbors were dove hunting about a quarter mile away, and I think they pushed him out of his bed and right into our lap.

He was standing quartering away at 21yds and I let the arrow fly. The shot was a bit low and back, but because of the angle, it did the job.

Constructing Your Own Wood Arrows in Archery

archery supply

Shawn Burgy asked:

Constructing your Own Wood Arrows in Archery :

As we may believe, Wooden arrows have been around for many years and probably century's. Wood is also most likely the first substance used in the making and production of arrows for archery. As the first arrow material, it's safe to say that arrow material used was the first when man started flinging shafts at game long ago. Wooden arrows are still just as popular today as they were yesterday. This being mostly because wooden arrows are traditional, people still like to use the traditional accouterment's. Wooden arrows have changed little over the years or century's, but we see many variations.

In yesterdays gone by, when an archer wanted to shoot wooden arrows, they merely ordered a few dozen, or maybe even a few hundred. These were usually made out of Port Orford cedar, they were available in three grades, Premium, select or mill-run. The first two grades were a bit rigid in selection of the shaft by the distributor, shafts were matched in there spine and by there weight. Of course Premium arrows were of the finest grade and quality, these were excellent arrows. The Select grade were just a touch less matched than there Premium counterpart, these were still excellent hunting arrows. The Mill-run grade was what its name implies, hundred mill run shafts from a spin range of 60 to 65 pounds. For the most part these arrow shafts ran in this range, you would however end up with a few wild arrows from time to time. This of course was in the respects of there spine and weight measurements being a hair or two off. We would in turn, sort, match and construct some good arrows, dependent on the type of game or target we were after.

Today, if you try to find Port Orford shafts, your going to have a big problem, it's just hardly available anymore. So in turn, different makers of arrow shafts have been searching for a good wood to replace the infamous cedar. One point to keep in mind is the fact, one needs more than just a fletching jig to work up good wood arrows. In this equation Pine maybe the answer looked for in the replacement of the cedar. One could construct these out of Canadian Pine with very good results.

Remember that constructing your own arrows takes time and patience, So take your time and learn something new, But keep patience and don't give up.

Supplies needed to construct Pine arrow shafts

  • Sorted Pine Shafts (By weight and spine)
  • Saunders Arrow Fletching Cement
  • Two Tapering Tools (For the nock and broadhead tapers)
  • Feathers (Such as TrueFlight for shield config)
  • Fletching Jig
  • Wood Stain
  • Wood Finish

Hunting With Archery

hunting bow
Shawn Burgy asked:

Hunting with Archery:

One of the oldest forms of hunting can probably be found and dated with Archery. Archery as we may know of it today is a lot like it has been for hundreds and thousands of years. Without the above mentioned, One would have to go out with a knife and go crazy on your prey. But with the wonderful advent of the bow and arrow, This has made it possible to make a quiet distant kill for our food.

This being one of the weapons of choice of the master hunter, Mr.Ted Nudgent, Nugent also lovingly referred to as The Motor City Madman, Has a love for this way of hunting. He's made wild game hunting one the specialty's that he very much enjoys. Whether it be for wild elf or some other type of critter, The Nudge loves to bow hunt. I would mention that in his hunting, He either uses a Compound Bow or a newer model Crossbow, sometimes he uses a firearm.

He is also very passionate and proud to put all of the wonderful tasty meat on his table. With good reason behind his actions, He's also been fought hard by a lot of action groups because of this. Archery is still one of his staples usually with his trusty bow and arrows. His adventurous hunting nature has been seen first hand from his TV program “The Spirit of the Wild”.

Also the American Indians used this type of strategy in there hunting of the great Buffalo. The Buffalo for century's has been a staple of there diet. For clothing and food, Archery Hunting has been there way of survival. The world is a battle of the fittest, Archery has proven to be the bread bringer in all cases. Without Archery people would have starved and did because they couldn't hunt. If people weren't willing to do some work to get the food, Then they were going to starve.

Whether it be Mule Deer, Whitetail, Elk, or other types of game, archery is a staple in the area of game hunting. This can be even more significant with the advent of newer technology's. The invent of the Compound Bow has done wonders for the world of hunting and target shooting alike. Making better the experiences and ease the work and strain that the hunter has to undergo.

In my opinion, for hunting purposes it's best to use an arrow. One good reason is, if your hunting for food, you end up with a nice clean kill with perfect meat. When you hunt with a shotgun you get scatter, this scatter gets to the meat and you have to be careful when eating it. With hunting with bow and arrow theres no chance of this occurrence.

If its only to read and study about the history of Archery.

An Overview of Different Archery Styles

archery target
Scott Byers asked:

The first type of archery we'll focus on is "Target Archery". Target Archery is practiced my mainly competitive archers which consist of "Target Archery Rounds" in which the archer shoots arrows at a target at various distances, usually wearing a bracer on their arm to keep loose clothing away from the string and a finger tab to make for a smooth release off the fingers. Some archers also use a chest guard to keep loose clothing at bay. In this type of archery, the archer stands erect. The archer's back muscles are used to pull the arrow to the anchor point.

The second type of archery is "Clout Archery". In this type of archery, participants shoot from a distance at selected marking areas in the ground. This type of archery gets its name from what old English would call "Clouts" on the ground for the marking areas. For gentlemen, they must shoot at 180 yards and ladies must shoot at 140 yards. Junior gentleman under eighteen years old must shoot at 140 yards, under sixteen 120 yards, under fourteen 100 yards, under twelve 80 yards. Junior ladies under eighteen must shoot at 120 yards, under sixteen at 100 yards, and under thirteen 80 yards.

The third type archery we'll focus on is "Field Archery". The only similarity this type of archery bears to target archery is that there is a target to be shot at, but that's all the similarity they share. The shooters in this type of archery will shoot at 28 targets in a wilderness/nature environment in a sequence, shooting 4 arrows at each target. Each of the targets are set at different distances and angles and must be shot either up or down depending on the kind of target. The most commonly shot rounds in this type of archery are "Field" and "Hunter" rounds. The targets also vary in size depending on the round being shot at it as well as the distance. Because of the rocky, unsteady terrain of field archery, it makes it significantly more difficult than the flat targets shot at in target archery.

The fourth and final type of archery is called "Flight Archery". It's meant to improve the distance of the archers' shooting and is an important and traditional part of archery. Different archers' experimenting with this type of archery has resulted in better, more accurate shooting. Flight archery is practiced in wide, open areas because of the distance that carbon arrows can fly (about 300 M or more). This type of archery is started by putting down a shooting line. In flight archery, you must have both feet between the line, unlike target archery where you must only have one. With the arrow on the string, you point the bow up at about a 45 degree angle (over head draw). You slowly draw the bow as soon as full draw is reached. In flight archery, there is no holding at full draw because the arrow will lose energy.

The Requirements for the Art of Archery

archery supply
Tevin Grant asked:

The art of archery has lived in human history since ancient times when hunters sourced for food in the animal fields with weapons in the shape of bows and arrows, till modern times where you now have people enjoying the sport as witnessed by hundreds of individuals who constantly look for archery fields and cheap archery supplies. What had started out as a form of tool to sustain human lives has gradually evolved into a global sport that not only provides a colorful spectacle, but also requires endless hours of discipline and dedication to perfect and perform. Archery has also remained an integral part of the art of hunting, where individuals participate in both the real shooting of animals for food, as well as the gaming aspect of prize hunting.

Archery has a very basic structure, which is essentially made up of the two critical components of the bow and arrow. The bow is the main tool that provides the archer or hunter with the foundation on which to shape his prey and to launch his attacks. It is the platform on which the archer uses to take aim at the target and from which the arrow will be shot. This is also the reason why a lot of effort and hard work is put into the design aspects of a bow. It has resulted in spawning many different types of archery bows that each serve different needs and contain unique advantages, including the longbow, short bow, crossbow and the different types of compound bows such as Diamond compound bows and many more. The advancement in technology in the modern world has also contributed to modern bows that strike a balance in superior quality and smooth usability, as well as price savings which result in equipment such as cheap compound bows.

The arrow is the killing tool with which archers use either to snare their prey, or to shoot at targets designated in archery competitions or hunting tournaments. As with the modern bow, arrows are also made from various materials including, but not limited to, carbon and wood. Depending on the archer’s situation and also personal preferences, different types of arrows are used. Factors such as the weight of the arrow, the hunter’s target or tournament rules dictate the eventual use of an arrow type. The arrow shaft needs to be built with strong material in order to provide the strength and stability required when the arrow tip hits the target. The arrow tip, in turn, has to provide the cutting edge necessary to plunge deep into the target to secure a perfect hit.

For practitioners of the art of archery, one needs to spend much time on a trained stance that will provide further strong foundations to shooting an arrow. The archer has to ensure that his stance is correct and steady, with the body posture fixed and aligned to his eyes and bow in order to launch the arrow properly. Failure to do so would not only hurt the archer physically, but the archery equipment could be used inappropriately which may harm its longevity. While this is extremely critical for archers who indulge in hunting, it can be often be overlooked by archers who participate more in tournaments which feature competitions based on shooting accuracy and overall archery ability. However, ultimately developing the correct stance and skills required for archery is necessary if one wishes to go far in the sport and to enjoy it at the same time.

Archery Targets to Aim for!

hunting bow
Tiraton Athiwat asked:

k a cross-section of people what kind of sport they play or follow, you will be stunned with the given responses. Some will say football, tennis, squash, or athletics, and there will only be a very small percentage that say archery. Archery is a skill that in the past was predominantly used for hunting and warfare, and in modern times has now become a sport. Although archery has fewer aficionados than, say, football, nevertheless its popularity is now beginning to soar.

Bow archery gear is the first thing that you have to think about when you commit to making archery your sport. Bows are made of various flexible but strong materials, such as graphite, fiberglass or wood, with a string or cord that joins the two ends of the bow, and is stretched taut. The arrow is usually made of graphite, and has a pointed and piercing shaft.

There are various types of bows that archers can choose from, and these bows are reliant on limb construction for better precision and targeting. If you take on archery as a serious sport then you need to be acquainted with different types of bows, each tagged for different purposes. If you opt for bows with straight limbs, then the longbow is the ideal sort of gear to choose, with its relatively slender cross section of bough. Another type of bow is the flat bow, which is characterized by a rectangular cross section.

If you prefer to acquire archery gear that will help to reduce the force and resistance, then you can opt for a compound bow. This type of bow is engineered to allow a particular archer to grip with double the weight, given a specified duration of time. To put it in plain words, an archer carrying a 60 pound bow can draw as much as 70% with that of its original weight. There is a lot of archery equipment available at your local specialist stores, which have paved the way for greater price cuts and discounts. Stores such as this are suitable for archers who want to get a good look and feel of the equipment. However, you can also browse the various websites if you want to find a great selection of archery gear.

At present, modern bow strings being used by novices, professionals and enthusiasts tend to be made from state of the art materials, such as Dacron, which provides great strength and accuracy. Apart from bows and arrows, protective gear should not be overlooked. Chest guards are mostly worn by archers to protect their body from an accidental hit. As you release the arrow for a shot, you also need to use a leather tab, or a thumb ring, to protect your fingers.

Archery gear is recognized as well-defined equipment completing the entire paraphernalia required to play the game. Therefore, ensure that your bow is fitted to the bowstring as you pull it back for maximum tension, and the arrow aiming for the target.

Bow Hunting Supplies – Wax and Lubricants

archery supply
Jennifer Walterscheit asked:

Lubricants and waxes are used to reduce string abrasions and friction normally found in wheels, rollers and cable slides. They are also used for bowstring lubrication and rejuvenation and to help the strings resist water ***********. We will look into this great example of bowhunting supplies further.

Xcclerator Bow String Wax

First we will look at a product from Bohning Archery called the Xcclerator Bow String Wax. This effective bowstring wax is an all-natural product that will help your strings resist water *********** all the way down to the string fibers. What an amazing bowhunting supplies item from Bohning Archery. It also reduces abrasion and friction from strings that would cause problems in the wheels, rollers and cable slides.

Liquid Lok and Cam EZ

Another company that supplies waxes and lubricants is Brownell. Their product is called Liquid Lok and Cam EZ. Liquid Lok help you to keep you center and end servings in place. What a great example of top-notch bowhunting supplies. The Cam EZ product was made to be applied to your end serving in order to reduce friction problems and increase string durability.

Archery Target Release Fluid

Scorpion Venom has a product called Archery Target Release Fluid. This high quality blend of polymeric ingredients is possibly the slipperiest and slickest brand around. It has been perfectly formulated for 3D target shooters. And that is good news for you, because you will be able to quickly pull out your arrows from the target without backaches and pains. What a high quality bowhunting supplies item this is.

Archery Polymeric Sting Fluid

Here is another great bowhunting supplies item from Scorpion called Venom Archery Polymeric Sting Fluid. Another polymeric based formula from Scorpion, this fluid will enhance the performance and life of your strings. This is a very good product to use with compound bow and re-curve bowstrings. And when the temperatures begin to fall, it will maintain its characteristics and it is non-brittle. This is a great new bowhunting supplies technology from Scorpion. Next, we'll discuss another essential element you'll be sure to want to add to your bowhunting supplies: the Archery Polymeric Bowstring Wax. Every Archer needs to have a good wax to be successful. Wax should always be a part of your tool kit.

Archery Polymeric Bowstring Wax

This wax was created for those hunters who wanted to use more of a traditional dressing. It will not become brittle or freeze because it is flexible. The wax is comprised of Shea, Mango and Kokum oils which will prevent premature oxidization or aging of it. And of course it is odor free so the deer won't get a whiff of it at all. These have all been great examples of quality bowhunting supplies.

The handful of waxes and lubricants mentioned here just touched the tip of the iceberg. There are so many more brands and different applications that they can be used for. Many hunters find value in a wide assortment of Bowhunting supplies, and we're sure you will too. To find out more about these waxes and lubricants, and whole lot more about bowhunting supplies, go to www.eaglearchery.com.

Top Quality Hunting bows for less!

Selecting Your Bow Sights

hunting bow
Jennifer Walterscheit asked:

Modern bow sights come with enhanced features to provide help in different aspects of target shooting and bow hunting. For example when you add leveling bubbles it helps you in tuning and you improve the accuracy too. This will result in eliminating torque. When poor lighting is an issue, the pins can be illuminated through lighted sight pins or lights mounted on the sight body. This adds greater accuracy to your shooting. The benefits from these features apply to specific type of shooting and the key therefore is matching the archery type with the appropriate equipment.

Influenced by personal preference

Before you set out to buy bow sights, you need to devote time considering how you normally shoot, the bow type you have, and the additions you need for shooting. Bow sights which are a perfect fit for your friend need not necessarily qualify as the best for you for the simple reason that your style of archery is quite different from your friend. Another reason why your bow sights should be different is that your bow itself can be different from what your friend has. When you pursue archery as a hobby or a serious sport, getting recommendations on a variety of equipments including bow sights is perhaps the easiest thing. But, the strongest recommendation to should be put to test and all options reviewed. Whenever possible, the equipment should be tried out in a variety of shooting situations.

Equipments for bow hunters

At times, bow hunters may need to move through rough terrain, and in such situations, they are likely to prefer a lighter bow and more compact compared to the ones employed for competitive purposes. Modern designs in hunting bows have shorter on axle to axle and therefore carry lower weight making it easier to hang up when chasing the target. Bow sights for this type of bows too tend to be lighter and the hunter can avoid carrying tools for adjusting bow sights.

Bow sights for Competitive shooting

As opposed to bow hunters, archers engaged in competitive shooting need bow sights of a different type. Competitive shooting involves shooting over longer distances and calls for heavier equipment for additional stability to the equipment. Heavier bow sights therefore are likely to be their favorites. A bow sight which needs time for adjustment before dial cannot be a problem, and on the contrary, can be advantageous in competition. Archers involved with competitive shooting will have adequate time to set up the shot with adequate care to be accurate and walk away with the laurels.

Combination of competitive shooting and bow hunting

When you have equal interest both in bow hunting and competitive shooting, like many of the present day archers, the bow sights should be different. At least one for each activity. Bow sights are made in such a way that mounting and dismounting are easy with varying forms of archery. Another way would be to buy two additional bow sightsand keep them attached permanently to two different bows.

Learn the secret of Recurve Bows!

Bow Hunting Wild Turkey

hunting bow
Razvan Jr asked:

Although not very popular among hunting enthusiast, this particular type of hunting can be very exciting and if done properly, fruitful as well. Hunting wild turkeys using a bow takes skill and patience, that is why not many hunters embark on this difficult adventure. If you are a big game fan, think of a bow hunting for wild turkey adventure as a spring training. We offer you some tips regarding this particular type of hunting:

First of all, the draw weight: a confident bow hunter will always choose a draw weight that will not affect his ability to make an accurate shot, no matter what are circumstances in which he will make that shot. We recommend using a bow scale in order to check the bow’s draw weight. The heavy vibrations that are produced during the shot can in some cases alter the limb bolts and will reduce the draw weight.

Second of all, the broadheads: the shot placement in wild turkey hunts is critical. Unlike the vast majority of the big games, the wild turkey’s vitals are about the size of a grapefruit. Many amateur hunters make the mistake of shooting arrows with field points and then after that they switch over to broadheads the day of the hunt. It is imperative to practice shooting with broadheads long before the day of the hunt. Regarding this issue, don’t forget about the diameter restrictions your state imposes so be sure to check them before the hunting day.

Moving on, three of the most vital aspects for you bow hunting success are: sight system, bowstring and the arrow rest. As most of you know, pins tend to slide up and down and eventually bend and break, this problem also occurs with the frames that serve for protection. Don’t forget to give your bowstring a once-over the moment you have finished tinkering with your sights. Remember to look for cut strands because they can lead to inefficient shooting and God forbid, dangerous situations if the string breaks during the shot. Apply wax to your string on a regular basis and check the arrow rest in order to make sure that nothing has moved/loosened since your last hunting expedition. The arrow rests are very important as they can affect the flight of the arrow.

Many hunters make the mistake of not taking seriously into consideration the nock set. The slightest movement up or down where the arrow meets the string can alter the arrow’s flight as it comes off the string. We recommend using a bow square so that you can measure the exact point on the bowstring, the place where the nock set allows for the most efficient arrow flight.

Placement is crucial for hunting wild turkey with a bow that is why in order to be an efficient bow hunter you have to put in the time. All turkey hunters that use a bow have to change their hunting tactics in comparison with the hunters that use the old-fashioned shotgun because shot gunners can easily plop down at the closest tree the width of their back and with no efforts, create efficient shooting lanes. A regular bow hunter can’t afford this luxury so the best setups are those that are thought well in advance.

Last but not least, practice makes perfect. If you are uncertain of your bow hunting skills you need to practice in order to improve your overall performance. Remember to shoot from both sitting and kneeling positions because in real action you will rarely have the opportunity of shooting a turkey in standing position but of course, a few shots from standing position won’t hurt anyone.

All in all, bow hunting wild turkey takes a lot of practice and patience but with proper training it can bring the excitement that all hunting enthusiasts are looking for.

Cheap Marting Bows!

archery supply
Jennifer Walterscheit asked:

Stabilizers are used to eliminate vibrations and increase your accuracy when using your bow. Stabilizers are placed strategically so that they will deaden hand shock and vibrations that may have a negative effect on the outcome of your shots. This is a great example of high quality bowhunting supplies.

Super Stix stabilizer

The first product from Specialty Archery we will look at is the Super Stix stabilizer. It is a great example of quality bowhunting supplies. This stabilizer system will help with balance and performance when used with your bow. These Super Stix are made out of a tough carbon material, they have a weight holder and a Navcon slider rod separater. This all adds up to a rugged and efficient way to make stabilizers.

Ultra Lite Super Stix

Another great bowhunting supplies product form Specialty Archery is the Ultra Lite Super Stix. These Stix are perfect for someone who wants to add quality performance to their bow without adding too much weight. This stabilizer utilizes three rods to hold the NAVCOM components. These components are adjustable, by either position or weight, letting you almost eliminate all vibrations and to achieve perfect balancing. The Super Stix stabilizers are also very aerodynamic, helping you to not loose your aim when the wind is blowing. Let's go ahead and look at some bowhunting supplies from Carolina Archery Products.

Deluxe LORE stabilizer

The first stabilizer from Carolina Archery Products we will look at is the Deluxe LORE stabilizer. This is great bowhunting suppliesitem from Carolina Archery Products. Their LORE stabilizer has the great benefit of a built-in articulated base, doing away with purchasing a separate item called a clumsy knuckle. This stabilizer also features a matching wrist sling and a knurled grip so that you will have no need to use other tools for installation. And as if that were not enough, the company developed their Press Pin Technology. The technology is used to install linear springs while actually bonding them to the base at an atomic level. This resulted in vibration dampening that is unparalleled in today's market. A great high-tech example of bowhunting supplies from CAP.

Armored Hunter Lite

The first product from Doinker we will look at is called the Armored Hunter Lite. This new version is a lot better than the previous generations. It is definitely lighter and has now been designed to incorporate ITP, which is a thermo-elastometric compound. This was done in order to be a much better performing shockwave and noise deadener. Doinker Stabilizers are known to be the world best bowhunting supplies maker.

Stabilizers are great for any hunter who is looking to decrease vibrations and hand shock that will end up throwing off your shot. If you need stabilizers or more information about them, go to www.eaglearchery.com. This company has many more stabilizer varieties and brands than were talked about here. Not to mention that they have so may other varieties of hunting supplies and equipment.

Archery Targets to Aim for!

archery supply
Shawn Burgy asked:

Archery Equipment – Ancient Bows and Modern Uses:

Here to some degree we will be talking primitive archery and equipment that was used by early peoples. We must in this subject talk about backed bows as well as self bows. These primitive people would have used a great number of different materials in the building of these early bows, They also would have had to depend upon local supplies that were available to them in there areas. In different parts of the world, supplies for the building of bows would have had to differ as well. In these respects ancestors would have found a variety of these materials from which they could make there bows and arrows. Most of the time, early bow and arrow makers had to rely on what they had on hand.

Remember, It wasn't like today where you could order whatever the best type of wood was for your projects, it really makes you appreciate the way things are today. Most of the modern bows you will find or see today are backed with fiberglass, this being a substance that didn't even exist. Primitive bow makers would probably have loved to have gotten there hands on some fiberglass, and also the modern glues we have today. It would have made there bow making a whole lot easier indeed.

Even though they didn't have the things we have today, they made very effective bows and arrows from what they did have available. They had to learn to use what they had, no matter what. They would use what they had, by itself, or with a combination of other materials available to them.

For the most part these bows they created, were made out of whatever wood they had available in there immediate area. There is evidence that early bows used more than one type of wood in there construction. If found necessary by the maker, early bows were backed sometimes with animal products such as sinew or rawhide, sinew was the most common. There are several variable theories as to why primitive people used backings on there bows, most of these reasons seem to point to the same thing “ It was the fast way to get a working bow to get some food for dinner”.

The use of a wood backing was uncommon practice, It would seem this is something that started just in the last decade or so. This has became increasingly popular, It helps relive stress from the bow and undue breakage. Now the work involved in backing a bow with rawhide or sinew is much more complicated than a wood backing.

So saying using wood, the process is simply one of lamination, gluing a thin layer of wood onto the back of the bow.

We learn that the bow doesn't just belong to Robin Hood or William Tell but to all of us.

If its only to read and study about the history of Archery.

It still holds a lot of information and learning potential for your mind to develop on something new.

Archery and Beursault

archery target
Arthur Archer asked:

Archery and Beursault:

Beursault, Is a traditional Northern French and Belgian type of Archery contest. From 50 meter away, Archer teams shoot two targets that are facing each other. With this in an array of perpendicular wooden walls, These secure a path to the parallel of the shooting range. At the start of each of these rounds, Archers take there own arrows and shoot directly in the opposite directions of each other (This gives them a certain windage and advantage).

For constant arrow quality, one will shoot as they would have in Mid-Evil times. A round black and white target will mimic a soldier of the opposing Army. It's diameter is likewise shoulder wide, the center is that of heart shaped.

Of course this also differs in such as other forms of Archery, As one would well guess.

There is also Wand Shoot, Roving Marks, and other various forms of competition archery shooting. These are all traditional forms of Archery shooting and sport. There truly is a vast array of various fun to be had in Archery. As an Archer one could try all different forms of the sport and never get tired of what can be had and seen in Archery. From modern to ancient these different styles of Archery have endured into what we see today.

There are many different forms of Archery. When it comes to ‘game’ it is formerly known as ‘bowhunting’ unlike that of Bowfishing which is used purely for the hunting of fish but with both techniques legal, cultural and seasonal differences come into play and must be considered when comparing to seasons condoned for ‘firearm’ hunting.

Whether your target shooting or bowhunting, Archery has something for everyone young and old.

Choosing the correct Recurve Bow

A recurve bow is made to curve away from you when drawn, translating into more forceful shots because the arrows are faster due to the sudden tension release that propels arrows with more force than what it took to draw them in. Recurve bows are also the ones only permitted for use in competitive archery, with bows made of carbon fiber, laminated wood cores, or fiber glass layers. The riser, where the two limbs are attached, are normally made from magnesium or aluminum. Beginners, however, start out with plastic or wood risers.

Choosing a recurve bow

Here are some options for you consider in choosing a recurve bow:

One-piece recurve bows - solidly constructed, these bows have risers and limbs made from a single piece of material. Made from fiberglass with wooden cores or laminated wood, one-piece recurve bows are harder to draw since they don't bend back as easily as the others.

Take-downs with wooden risers - take-downs are recurve bows that can be disassembled to separate the limbs and the riser. Since their risers are made from wood, the risers tend to snap easily and are less durable compared to composite or metal risers. Having wooden risers laminated with carbon fiber may help in making them more durable.

Take-downs with metal risers - using the same take-down design, these recurve bows are detachable which makes for easy drawing and shooting. The metal risers are made from machined or cast metal alloys, with machined risers using aluminum and cast risers using magnesium alloys.

Buying tips and tricks

When choosing a recurve bow, look for one that can withstand strong tension and pulls. Go for a recurve bow that is rigid and yet able to bend easily and return to shape. Carbon fiber risers and limbs are the most durable but they are less common and more expensive. Metal ones, however, are ideal for most skill levels. If you're opting for wooden risers, look for cedar.
