Archery and War

archery supply
Shawn Burgy asked:

Archery and War:

Archery and war together has great significance, If we split these two words apart they can have different meanings. But there historical value together shades a theoretical points in there separate light as a whole. If we could go back throughout the 25,000 to 50,000 year span of this history, What would we find? We know of the English Yeoman, The ancient Spanish hieroglyphics of ancient caves. But what information does this supply us about the Archer and the history of the battlefields that were once fought? We know a lot about the British Anglo-Saxon feats that were brought forth. We are also pretty certain about the American Indians portrait of Archery in that era. This also in addition to the explorations of Dr. Pope and Art Young. Also the scholarly efforts of National Champion Robert Elmer, Again simulated imagination of the public. One cannot deny archery's current growth due to field archery and hunting.

But what about Archery in and around war times?

We can ascertain to say that Archers and Archery and war and hunting are all parts of the whole to be considered. This equation of archery can be an important role in our historical discovery of this subject of interest. Ageless archery consists of cultural advances in the faces of mankind. It's believed that origins revealed through cave drawings by the Paleolithic man in France and Spain. Theoretical cro-magnon man from 30,000 to 40,000 years ago. It's also well seen from the Aurignacian race in southern France from some 25,000 years ago. The bow and arrow were developed through these periods on every continent. These would include, Israelites, Babylonians, Egyptians, Assyrians, Persians, Greek Romans, Turkish, Asians, Europeans, American Indians. At some fascia Australians are the only ones that we may question of this technology.

European war triumphed immensely because of the bow and arrow. We know in 1066 Hastings, The Normans defeated our English brothers. 1340-1453 was the time of the Hundred Years War, 1588 saw the Invasion of the Spanish Armada. Around this time was when firearms replaced the bow as a major weapon in England. So there is documented vast information in the world of archery from these time periods. Also from archaeological finds, We plainly see what vast civilizations did for the wold of Archery.

If its only to read and study about the history of Archery.

It still holds a lot of information and learning potential for your mind to develop on something new.

Top Quality Hunting bows for less!

Important Bow Hunting Supplies

hunting bow
Philippe De Tiege asked:

Many people use guns to hunt now. Although this is a more than acceptable way to hunt, it can be less of a skill than hunting with a bow and arrow is. Bow hunting is one of the most popular sports for the sportsmen. As an bonus, hunting with a bow and arrow is also very retro and it gets back to what hunting used to be like before the invention of the gun. If you'd like to do this kind of hunting, there are some general supplies you should get. Luckily, bow hunting supplies are easy to acquire at almost any outdoor recreation and hunting store.

Bow hunting can be challenging, exciting, and rewarding if you are properly prepared. Bow hunting is one of the fastest growing sports in the world.

The most important bow hunting supplies are the actual bow and arrows. For the bow, you should get something a bit expensive. The cheaper bows will be at a much more diminished quality than the regularly priced ones. Since the bow is, in essence, your gun, you need to get a good one. Picking the right type of arrows is as crucial as picking the correct bow. Not all arrows are created equal, some are longer than others and some are lighter. It is important to talk with your sporting good supplier to find out which arrows are compatible with your specific type of bow..

Another thing you should pick up is extra bow wire. The bow wire can sometimes break when you pull it back, so you should have extras on hand in case this happens. One of the overlooked bow hunting supplies is the leather glove. Pulling back on the bow can really hurt and chap your hands after a while of use. To prevent bad hand chafing, pick up some leather gloves to wear when you hunt. This will also improve your grip on the bow and arrow, improving your shot. Many hunters have deep blisters on their hands after their first time bow hunting. This is because they didn't realize what a toll this kind of hunting puts on your hands. Unfortunately, the use of gloves isn't obvious; so many hunters go through this pain. Get gloves, important bow hunting supplies, in order to prevent this kind of painful mistake. You'll definitely be grateful that you did.

Bow hunting can definitely be an adventure. It brings you right back to nature, using a natural way to hunt your game. If you'd like to partake in this activity, then pick up these bow hunting supplies. They will improve your next hunting trip and take care of the snafus that novices make their first time around.

Archery Targets to Aim for!

Archery and a List of Archery Terms

archery target
Arthur Archer asked:

Archery and a List of Archery Terms:

When we think about all Archery has to offer we don't always look at terms. So today we will take a look at some of the terms used in Archery and see where they themselves correspond. Whether your talking Shortbow, Longbow or any other type of thing that has to do with Archery. It is a good idea to familiarize yourself with the terms used.

A:

A/C/C

Aluminium/Carbon/Competition arrow shafts made by 'Easton'.

Made of multiple layers of carbon graphite fibres in a epoxy resin wrapped over a high strength aluminium shaft (0.2mm thick).

The code numbers printed on the shaft indicate its size:

eg. 3-71/300 where 3 is the number of carbon layers, 71 is the last two digits of the core aluminium shafts thickness in thousandths of an inch (0.271") and 300 is the spine of the arrow in thousandths of an inch.

There are specific types of points and nocks for this arrow shaft.

These shafts are lighter than the 'Ultra-Lite' Aluminium shafts.

A/C/E

Aluminium/Carbon/Extreme arrow shafts made by 'Easton'.

Made much the same as the A/C/C arrows, except the shafts are 'barrel-shaped', being thicker in the centre of the shaft and tapered at each end. This creates a much lighter and stiffer arrow.

The code numbers printed on the shaft indicates its size:

eg. 1206G/370 where 12 is the diameter of the aluminium core shaft measured in 64ths of an inch, 06 is the aluminium shafts thickness measured in thousandths of an inch, G indicates the model series and 370 is the spine of the arrow in thousandths of an inch.

There are specific types of points and nocks for this arrow shaft.

These shafts are lighter than the A/C/C shafts.

Actual Draw Weight

The measured or calculated draw weight of an Archer.

eg. a marked bow of 30 lbs. at 28" draw when used by a person having a 27" draw length will have an actual draw weight of 28lbs.

(a 1" difference in draw length will make approx. 2 lbs. difference in draw weight.)

Aim

To superimpose a sight pin on the centre of a target or, when not using a sight, the placement of the tip of the arrow on a particular point for a given distance.

Anchor

A combination of points to which the bowstring and/or index finger of the drawing hand are drawn to on the face and neck.

Anchor point

Definite spot on the archers body, normally the face, on which string and index finger come to rest.

Arbalest

A medieval crossbow that needed a windlass to draw the bowstring back.

Arm guard

A piece of stiff material used to protect the bow arm from the slap of the bow string upon release, worn on the inside of the bow arm.

Arrow Case

A box of wood or other material to store and carry arrows. Each arrow being held separate either via foam, slots or clips to protect the feathers or vanes.

Arrow plate

A plate, adjustable or fixed, to which the arrow rest is attached.

A piece of horn, shell or leather just above the handle of a longbow where the arrow passes as it leaves the bow.

Arrow point or pile

Metal point inserted into end of arrow shaft. Can also be that the shaft fits inside the point as in wooden shafts and some carbon shafts.

Arrow rest

A projection or support on the bow or the arrow plate located in the sight window on which the arrow lies when nocked on the bowstring.

Arrowsmith

A person who makes metal arrowheads.

Ascham

A tall narrow cabinet in which bows and arrows are kept.

Axle

The bearing pin holding the wheel in the limbs of a compound bow.

(The length of a compound bow is measured from top axle to bottom axle).

B:

Back

The side of the bow away from the bowstring.

Backed Bow

A bow which has been backed with rawhide, wood, fibre or sinew.

Ballista

A very large medieval crossbow used by an army attacking the walls of a besieged town. This crossbow was capable of firing large rocks and spears long distances.

Barebow

The discipline of shooting without a bow sight, stabilisers and release aid.

Bass or Bast

The twisted straw back of a straw mat target ****.

Belly

The side of the bow nearest the bow string. Now called the 'face'.

Blunt point

Usually a conical rubber arrow point with a flat tip designed not to let the arrow penetrate a target, but rather bounce off.

Bob-tailed Arrow

A arrow that is thicker at the point. It tapers to the nock end.

Bodkin

A medieval type of arrowhead designed to shoot through protective chainmail or armour usually worn by Knights.

Bolt

A short arrow used in a crossbow.

Bow arm

The arm that holds the bow.

Bow hand

The hand that holds the bow.

Bowhunter

Bow sight

A mechanical device attached to the bow with which the archer can aim directly at the target.

Bow sling

A leather or nylon strap, fastened to either the bow or the archer's hand, which prevents the bow from falling to the ground when the archer shoots without gripping the bow.

Bowstring

A multi stranded string of either Dacron, Kevlar or Fastflight looped to the bow nocks or teardrops.

Bow stringer

Cord with two pockets of dissimilar size or one pocket and one saddle, used to string a recurve bow.

Bow stave

A piece of wood used to make a bow.

Bow square

T-Shaped device to measure brace height and nocking point location.

Bowyer

A person who makes bows.

Brace height

Shortest distance from the string to the pivot point of the bow when strung. (Old English : Fistmele).

Bubble

See 'level'.

Butt (Target Butt)

Any backstop to which a target face is attached.

C:

Cables

The plastic covered steel cables that connect the string via the cams or wheels to the opposite limb of a compound bow. Cables can also be made of Fastflite string material.

Cams

The wheels on a compound bow have a 'cam shape' to one side that controls the amount of force and the shape of the draw/force curve of the bow. Many different cam shapes are available to choose from;

eg. Hoyt's 'Accuwheel' = soft cam, smooth shooting for target archers,

'Performa Cam' = radical cam, stores maximum energy for bowhunters.

Cant

To hold the bow to the right or left while at full draw. The reference to right or left is determined by the position of the top limb.

Cast

The distance a bow can propel an arrow.

Centre serving

The protective winding on the centre of the string where the arrows are nocked.

Centreshot bow

A bow where the sight window has been cut past the bow's centreline.

Classic style

A method of shooting with as little deviation as possible from normal relaxed body position.

Clicker

Small strip of metal mounted on the sight window in front of the arrow rest giving precise indication of full draw by snapping off the arrow point with an audible "click".

Clout

A form of target shooting in which an arrow is shot into the air at a 15 metre diameter target on the ground at distances of up to 180 metres.

Cock feather

The feather or vane set at right angles to the slot in the nock (also called the index fletch).

Composite bow

A Bow made of more than one material. Not necessarily a laminated bow.

Compound bow

A hand-drawn, hand-held bow that for similar poundage at full draw, stores more energy than a recurve bow through the use of two cables and two eccentric wheels. Most modern compound bows have a 65% let-off of the peak draw poundage at full draw, e.g. a compound bow of 60lb. peak weight will have a holding weight of approx. 21lb. at full draw.

Creep

Letting the arrow move slowly forward before release (not maintaining draw length). Usually caused by loss of shoulder/back muscle tension.

Cresting

Coloured bands applied to the arrow shaft used as identifying marks.

These are just some of the terms that you may encounter in the world of Archery.

See for yourself why Archery is the sport that it is, You will be glad that you did.

Archery Equipment – Compound Bows

archery target
Shawn Burgy asked:

Archery Equipment - Compound Bows:

Compound Bows may look more complicated and seem that way, Technically speaking they are a bow in the same manner a traditional bow would be. All bows regardless of whether there traditional, or compound, Still have specularity in common. All bows share the class of being simple mechanical devices which store and transfer human energy to an arrow as the bowstring is released. Many factors are involved to the extent that storage and transmission are physical, technical and therefore emotional. Your personal objective is still to accurately and persistently propel a sharpened arrow to its target. Threw some years between 50,000 and 25,000 years ago, Those primary targets wold have been food and animals and or enemy soldiers.

Today, targets can range from animals to a competition target. But for a lot of people hunting is still the main objective of this fascinating and unique hobby of archery. Sometimes these targets can be 3-D depictions of the animals as a archery practice device, against another archers ability's. Sometimes these may simply be painted circles used to test your skills against another's. Compound Bows with complex wheels, cams , strings, cables, yokes, nuts and bolts, along with other high end devices attached through one part or another. These devices were thought up to make the process of archery easier on the human muscular system and also to produce a more accurate arrow. Keep in mind that the energy must still be provided by the archer himself. The energy has always been stored in the bow limbs to produce the needed friction until released by the shooter.

Compound Bows were first invented in 1969, Records of this show from original drawings which the patent granted date is stated as December 30th,1969. This same design is still the valid representation of what the Compound Bow is today, Although many improvements have been made in these last some 40 years. No improvements as such to destroy what the Compound Bow represents to the archer. Before the development of the Compound Bow, Recurved Bows were what most archers would use. These are a far cry from the bows that Robin Hood probably used. These Recurved Bows are of a classic style shape and in some ways do resemble the Compound Bow. There seems to be some singularity between these two types, but this is were that ends. If we compare the Compound Bow to a Traditional Longbow rated at 60 pounds, the archer must pull back and hold the full 60 pounds at the established draw length in order to shoot an arrow.

We know get the drift of how much easier it is to shoot with a Compound Bow opposed to its Traditional Bow counterpart. With a Compound Bow the archer is only required to pull back 30 pounds to reach the full shooting potential. Now this is all dependent upon the amount of let-off designed into the rated eccentric wheels. These wheels that we are talking about are sometimes referred to as cams, modified cams or energy wheels, These terms are usually governed by the respective manufacturer.

We learn in all of this, the average archer can usually shoot a Compound Bow of much higher poundage, Reason being the archer can hold his bow at full draw a much longer period of time. In hence, this would not be remotely possible with a Traditional Bow at the same pound rate. If considering that all other aspects maybe the same, the higher the bow poundage, the faster our arrow will reach out intended target. In hence, A faster arrow will fly in a flatter trajectory with a lot less chance of a missed target. Even possibly if our range were to be misjudged, We should still get to the point of target we were looking for. We must remember that no matter what, The archer still must exert the same amount of force and muscle to draw either type of bow. The longer the archer has to hold back the arrow and string , the more strain must be put on the muscles. Also if the archer intends to pull back the string past the bows rating, the amount of effort will also build exponentially. This same effect may be argued regarding the Compound Bow, when the rated draw is reached, an abrupt and distinct stopping point is felt in terms of the archer.

No matter which type of bow is used, It's a fun and enjoyable hobby.

We learn that the bow doesn't just belong to Robin Hood or William Tell but to all of us.

If its only to read and study about the history of Archery.

It still holds a lot of information and learning potential for your mind to develop on something new.

Cheap Marting Bows!

A Look at the Exciting Sport of Archery

archery target
Mike Freemen asked:

Archery is one of the most interesting of all sports, and one of the most varied. The sport of archery means many things to many people. To the hunter, of course, the sport of archery means tracking the biggest buck through the thickest woods. To the Olympic archery expert, the sport of archery means matching skills with the best archers in the country and the world.

No matter where your interests lie, the sport of archery has a lot to recommend it. A sport like archery can provide excellent exercise, and it can help participants to develop the hand eye coordination that will come in handy in a myriad of other facets of life.

The equipment needed to start an archery hobby are actually pretty simple, but there is a great deal of adjunct equipment archery enthusiasts will most likely want to purchase. The most basic item of the archery hobby, of course, is the bow. As with other archery equipment, the prices of bows will vary quite widely, from bows that sell for under $100 to those that sell for thousands of dollars.

The beginning archery enthusiast will probably choose to start with one of the value priced bows, then move up as his or her experience level grows. This is a good way to get started in the archery hobby without breaking the bank right away.

That is because there will be plenty of archery supplies to buy even after the perfect bow has been found. Obviously, archery participants will need to purchase a good supply of arrows. The best way to get good at archery is to practice, and that means shooting lots of arrows off of that great bow. Any beginning archery enthusiast should be sure to purchase plenty of high quality arrows.

In addition, archery enthusiasts may want to purchase a selection of targets and backings. A simple bale of hay can make a great backing for all those archery targets, and there are many different archery targets to choose from. There are archery targets in the form of deer and other animals that are perfect for hunters, while the good old bulls eye targets are favored by many competitive archery participants. It is important to purchase a selection of good archery targets, and get plenty of practice.

Archery Targets and There Uses

archery target
Shawn Burgy asked:

Archery Targets and there Uses :

In todays world of archery there is a wide variety of ways to improve on targeting skills. Some still go for a more traditional approach, While others will try the newer approaches on target shooting. Target archery is still one of the number one games the archer will attempt, This can also be comprised at the competition level. This was mostly done with a round target with a bullseye in the center.

But today there are other options the archer may consider. Say the archer wants to practice on his hunting skill, This is where the newer technology can come into play. Nowadays there is such a thing as 3-D archery target shooting. This is where you can buy a 3-D target of the animal you may be planning to hunt, This is really good practice, Especially if you have never used your archery as grounds for hunting. Even if you never actually plan to go out for that 10 point Deer, These targets can be a lot of fun for the archer. They are available in such styles as Deer, Bear, Wild Turkey and also Wild Boar. One of the very neat features of these as targets, If you do to much damage to the target area, They are fully re-packable.

These have also been known to take a lot of damage before having to be repacked. So you should get a lot of practice and years of enjoyment from this type of target. You will be able to hone your hunting skill, also get the much needed practice at an affordable price and solution.

We learn that the bow doesn't just belong to Robin Hood or William Tell but to all of us.

It still holds a lot of information and learning potential for your mind to develop on something new.

Training in Archery for the Archer

archery target
Shawn Burgy asked:

Training in Archery:

Training in Archery may be a skill that has been long forgotten. But can still be a very fun and useful hobby today as it was in yesteryears. A trained Archer will know how you can learn and implement these skills to your best use. Whether your looking to learn for fun or for hunting, Archery is still as much fun as ever.

Archery is more than merely shotting an arrow to the destination target. It's a game of skill and chance, All you gotta do is face the music and dance. It takes skill and concentration to be a good marksman. Archery and marksmanship are the name of the game. Key eye sight will also help you to be a better marksman. These ingredients alone will not get you to the prize. The three key elements of Archery are these things put together.

What you will need:

Strong Concentration

Strong Eyesight

Be in strong Physical condition

Be prepared to learn and teach others.

If you plan on going into a hunting environment, There are now 3-D targets that can be obtained. Browning makes some of the nicer ones, there are four basic models you can choose from. These include Turkey, Deer, Wild Boar and Bear. Browning's foam 3-D targets are made of water-blown urethane that does not produce hazardous CFCs. So they are completely environmentally safe, especially when this is such a our environment is of great concern these days.

All of these things together should help yourself and others with a new found love of Archery. Be willing to commit sometime with your learning. Make time to work on your new hobby, Practice will make you a better marksman, It will also help you on your journey to marksmanship.

Be open, Help others learn as well,

Remember that Archery is more than aiming at a round target yards away.

If its only to read and study about the history of Archery.

It still holds a lot of information and learning potential for your mind to develop on something new.

Cheap Marting Bows!

archery target
Jennifer Walterscheit asked:

With a bow & arrow, hunting can be lot more challenging compared to hunting with firearms. The skills expected from a bow hunter are much greater since he has to draw closer to the targets as compared hunters using guns. Among the variety of archery equipment available for bow hunters, the 3D targets occupy a prominent place. 3D targets afford the opportunity for new hunters and the experienced ones looking for acquiring higher levels of skill, or training to hunt new animals.

3D targets shapes

The shape of several of these 3D targets among archery equipment also resembles the animals commonly hunted by using the bow and arrow. Some of these animals are bear, wild boar, deer, moose, and mountain lions. The shapes come in handy in training the archer because the archer can focus on hitting the target accurately to achieve the kill. For archers, hunting is quite different from those employing guns or other equipment, because archers need to draw themselves so close to the target for the kill, and often they do not get a second chance.

Advantages of 3D targets

By gaining proficiency in hitting three dimensional targets at the right spots increases the likelihood of the hunter killing the animal while hunting. In an archery equipment store, you will notice that several of the 3D archery targets are made up of foam which helps the arrow in penetrating the target. The archery equipment store will also explain to you that the more expensive targets have layered foam to make it even harder for achieving *********** of the target. The layering is to assist the archer in gaining higher levels of accuracy, because the simulation is more realistic. It also provides better understanding of the force required while using the archery equipment in real situations to pierce through fur and skin to reach the flesh.

How the layering helps

The friction at the point of impact is greatly reduced by layering. This results in lesser damaged to the 3D target itself. With frequent however, the target is liable to get damaged though. Several brands therefore offer core parts that are replaceable. Some of the 3D targets may even sport a cutaway effect. The advantage with this type of archery equipment is that the layers under the skin are revealed helping the archer to focus on kill zones that are very specific.

Archery ranges

3D targets can help you perfect your skills and hit exactly the sensitive areas on an animal. While those of you who do have a safe outdoor space to practice can either buy the archery equipment required or even hire it, there are also archery ranges where you can practice on the 3D targets set up by them. The hunting recreations provided by these ranges can also simulate the real situation by positioning 3D targets on trails, behind trees, or other locations which are generally the habitat of animals.

Archery 3D targets are suitable not for the new hunters alone, the experienced can also beneficially use them to hone in their skills towards greater glory.

Cheap Marting Bows!

archery supply
Jennifer Walterscheit asked:

Vanes are used to stabilize the flight of the arrow. They usually have a consistent flight pattern in all weather conditions. They come in feather or plastic varieties. And depending on your specific needs, you can figure out which ones would suit you best. Let's go ahead and take a look at some more quality bowhunting supplies.

Quik Spin ST Vanes

The first New Archery Products we will look at is the Quik Spin ST Vanes. These vanes are constructed to be very tough and reliable, so you won't spend so much time re-fletching arrows. And that is a great benefit when you want to shoot a lot more and fix problems less. This is a great example of quality bowhunting supplies. With the new and improved Quik Spin system, and a lower profile, you can shoot more accurately even at distance. And because it has micro grooves on one side of it, the vane is able to channel air to provide a flatter trajectory in flight. And the patented kicker system can actually increase the spin of an arrow by up to 300%. You will benefit from this because it will produce tighter groupings. The combination of the micro grooves and patented kicker system can stabilize arrows in half the time as conventional vanes can. This is another high tech example of bowhunting supplies.

Quik Spin Vanes

The next offering from New Archery Products is the Quik Spin Vanes. If you want to shrink your groups, then you will enjoy the Quik Spin Vanes. This vane takes spin and accuracy to a whole new level, and you benefit from tight groups all the time. The vanes rotate over 100% quicker than feather vanes, and up to 300% faster than plastic vanes. Now let's look at some more quality bowhunting supplies from Bohning Archery.

Mini Blazer Vanes

The first high quality bowhunting supplies offered by Bohning Archery are called the Mini Blazer Vanes. These vanes were designed to be used with mechanical broadheads or field points. They are a perfect option for target shooters if you want the quality of a Mini Blazer's steering capability without a lot of extra weight. A top-notch item when it comes to bowhunting supplies.

Bohning Archery X Vanes

Next is the Bohning Archery X Vanes. These vanes are built by a company with over 60 years of experience with vanes. So they realize that they needed to build highly durable and highly accurate vanes. And they have succeeded with this product. It definitely lives up to all of the expectations.

Micro Blazer Vane

Last, we will look at another high quality bowhunting supplies item from Bohning Archery. It is the Micro Blazer Vane. This little vane is a smaller version of the Blazer Broadhead Vane. It benefits target shooters because it is a small vane and it uses the great steering technology of the original Blazer Vane. It only weighs just over 2 grains. A great bowhunting supplies example of quality products.

Vanes play such an important role in how your arrows fly, how fast they go and how accurate they will be. This article has discussed vanes made by Bohning Archery and New Archery Products. This is just scratching the surface of available vanes, though. If you want to find out more about them, visit www.eaglearchery.com.

The Best Way to Choose Archery Sights

archery supply
Jen Walterscheit asked:

It makes no difference whether you are looking to be a target archer or use it for hunting; the only way to get the best shot is to install archery sights on your bow. You should learn to shoot without one at first to get the feel of the bow but when you have, the archery sights will add twenty percent accuracy to what you can do without it.

The First Step

Decide on what special features the archery sights need to contain for you to purchase them. Some models are made from small plastic disks that you will mount on the bowstring itself. Others are more advanced and can come with a light for hunting at night. The features you desire will depend on what you intend to use the archery for. Once you have determined what you want in the sight, you need to decide on the budget you have to spend. Some of the better equipped models cost a considerable amount more than others do. Some economical models can provide you the same features for less money if you know where to look for those archery sights.

Weight And Design

The weight of the archery sights need to be a comfortable fit for you personally. The sights will cause the bow to be thrown off balance depending on where they are mounted. You will need to adjust how you aim and shoot after mounting one. A lightweight sight will only need a slight adjustment from you while a heavier one will take more. The archery sights need to be a good fit for the design and color of the bow. If your bow is camouflaged, the sight needs to be also. You do have the option to choose many colors but it might not be a good idea if you plan on hunting game. A bright color may stand out against the camouflage and give you away.

Materials Of The Maker

Take a careful look at what the archery sights are made from. If you plan on being out in the weather or using your bow on a regular basis, you need a sturdy sight. If you plan on archery for a hobby, a plastic model will work fine. Examine the uses of the bow and then decide on what works best. Make sure the model you choose is priced reasonably for what it is made of. Those starting out in archery will want to find something basic and light to begin with. Once they get better, the sight can be upgraded to keep up with their skill level.

Make The Upgrade

As your archery skills get better so should the type of archery sight you choose. Be cautious of starting out with the best and most expensive archery sights on the market. Start with a simple model and work your way up. The beginner phase of archery might seem more difficult with an advanced sight and cause the individual to get discouraged and give up because it seems too difficult. You can find some great archery sight models at Eagle Archery.

Archery Bow Selection: Types

hunting bow
Guy Phillips asked:

If you can think back a very long time ago to the Paleolithic era-that age when our great ancestors first learned that stones made handier tools than bare hands-then you'll understand how long archery has been around. Yes, as far back as ancient Egypt to the Assyrians and Babylonians, all the way to Hebrews of the Old Testament, archery has been practiced in sport, hunting and warfare since humans had hands. Today, though, we have the know-how to select archery bows that work best for our modern needs.

There are three types of bows used today, and variations of these even exist. Essentially, the basic three are the traditional longbow, the recurve bow and the compound bow. The longbow was used in medieval combat, because it shoots hard and straight. Often, too, the longbow is no taller than the archer using it. The archer can draw the string, take aim and shoot over long distances. The only downfall might be the cumbersome height and the long draw makes loading an arrow take longer. In hunting, this may be critical to the kill.

The recurve bow, by name, has a different sort of shape. The tips often curve and point away from the archer. Additionally, these two curves are set against the natural curve of the bow itself, providing more power with less bow height. Quicker turning and maneuverability makes the recurve bow especially good in woods and forest. When the recurve bow is strung (unlike the longbow), the string will actually touch the upper portions of the bow itself.

The compound bow uses the most of today's technology meshed with age-old wisdom. The compound bow enables the shooter to pull the string and "hold" it more easily. That is, when the archer pulls back on the string, two cams shift, holding the string taut in place. Not only does this provide more let-off (holding weight from pulling weight) and power, but equips the bow with more stability. This affords greater sight and aim for the archer.

Now that you have some idea of the basic types of bows (excluding the crossbow), it is easier to decide which archery bow suits you best. After which, there are other factors to consider when selecting an archery bow. One of the first, then, may be budget. The cost of the bows above can start under fifty dollars to the upper hundreds. Before you lay down the big bucks, be sure to test the bow before you buy it.

It's wise to have a basic understanding of the techniques for each too. You can often join a club or take lessons where the bow(s) will be provided. Moreover, buying a used bow for the first few months may save you several hundred dollars should you change your mind later. Go with the bare basics and move to the more luxurious later.

Additionally, it is smart to buy an archery bow that will benefit your cause. There are different reasons to use varying types of archery bows: These include but are not limited to hunting (such as deer hunting), competition (such as field archery and 3D archery) or simple personal enjoyment (such as at home target practice).

If you're going to be dashing through the woods chasing small woodland creatures, you won't want the same bow as used in target archery competition. Be sure to speak to club members, store staff and experienced archers before you select your personal favorite bow. Research before selecting your perfect archery bow will save you money and keep you from learning the hard way (more expensive way) later.

I passed this nice 8 point up at 5 yards. I set up on the west side of his bedding area so the wind was blowing directly to him. Hung out a pee-willy-wick filled with Black Widow and within 15 minutes he walked right to it. You got to let bucks like this go if you ever want to see wallhangers.I know I could of killed this buck but that is not what it is all about. I enjoyed watching him!!!

Learn the secret of Recurve Bows!

Examining the Bow Stabilizer

hunting bow
Damieng asked:

When you think of archery most of us think of the equipment is as basic as it gets - a bow and an arrow. This is true to a certain extent. Archery is a simple pastime that uses a lot of equipment and some are a little more mystifying for newcomers. Most people are clear when it comes to the bow itself, however the bow stabilizer is a piece of equipment that only the experienced archer will recognize. Basically, if you want to shoot accurately over a long period of time, the bow stabilizer is essential equipment.

A stabilizer serves two main functions. Number one is to hold the bow steady and more stable, hence its name. Number two is that there is less vibration and hand shock. More on this in just a moment.

Firstly we should examine what a stabilizer is made of so we can understand how it works. In the past they were made of metal. Metal is a rather heavy material and although you want to add some weight, because this is what keeps the bow stable, you don't want to make it too heavy. Carbon or AMS (Alphamethylstyrene) plastics are preferred these days|. The rigidity of carbon means that it performs properly while its light weight makes it comfortable to work with.

A dampening device allows the stabilizer to perform its second function, that of reducing the vibration through the bow from the force of releasing the bowstring. The dampening device will most likely be made of rubber although other vibration absorbent materials may be used. By putting the dampening material away from the end of the bow their effectiveness will be maximized.

The final device you’ll find on a stabilizer is a weight which will sit right on the end after the rubber material. The bow is counterbalanced by the weight which keeps the bow stable when it is being shot. {Aiming consistency is improved by the positioning of the weight at the front of the bow.

Stabilizers come in a range of lengths. The length of the stabilizer you need will depend considerably on the type of archery you plan on doing. In general, the longer the stabilizer you use the more steady your bow will be and consequently, the more accurate you are likely to be. Target archers use long stabilizers. Bowhunters, on the other hand, use shorter stabilizers because of the conditions under which they will be carrying and firing their bow.

Shorter stabilizers are used with shorter framed hunting bows due to the terrain you may be required to cover, long protruding pieces would be more likely to snag hindering progress as well as make more noise. Just the same, any extra weight on the bow would be accentuated the longer the bow has to be carried to the point where it would become extremely tiring.

Finally, we come back to the issue of reducing vibration. Any vibration experienced by the bow is going to be expressed as noise and when you are bow-hunting noise can prove to be one of your worst enemies. Repeated vibration eventually shifts other components on your bow affecting accuracy. Only around 75 per cent of the energy generated in releasing the bowstring gets transferred to the arrow. The rest has to go somewhere else and that is to the only other thing touching the bow, which is you. The accumulated shock that is transferred to your bow arm during a long day of shooting starts to hurt very quickly which will lead to shaking and reduced accuracy.

Having a stabilizer fitted to your bow is important in itself, but just as important is using a stabilizer that suits the kind or archery you will be undertaking. The sort of archer you are and your body type will also make a difference to the type of shooting you're going to use it for. You have to weigh things up, as it were, look for quality and decide what is most suitable to you and you will be sure to be shooting quietly and accurately.
